The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is a four days fiesta, held on August every year in Bristol, England. It is Europe’s largest ballooning event and this year this fiesta complete its 36th years. It is a four days of fun for the whole family from 7th – 10th August 2014. The UK and other parts of the world bring their hot air balloons here for participating in mass ascents where as many as 100 balloons may launch at a time.
History of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta
In the early 1960’s, Don Cameron, newly qualified aeronautical engineer, came to join the Bristol Aeroplane Company based at Filton. Every weekend he would go to the Bristol Gliding Club at Nympsfield where many aeronautical exploits were planned. Giles Bulmer was also a member of this Club and he showed a National Geographic Magazine copy in front of all members, which was showing a new type of hot-air balloon that had just been invented in the USA.
Seven members of this Club took up the idea of a hot-air balloon and after a long struggle they produced the “Bristol Belle”, the first modern hot-air balloon in Western Europe. It was first flown on 9th July 1967 and all the seven members of this group learned to fly using this balloon.
After that Don Cameron discovered the way to make a hot air balloon and he built a few more balloons for a hobby basis with demand slowly expanding. In 1970, Don Cameron resigned from his job and founded Cameron Balloons Ltd Company.
In 1978, Don Cameron attempted his first balloon fly over the Atlantic and ended in the sea about 100 miles from France. After this adventure trip his fellow members of the Bristol Junior Chamber asked him about his journey and the idea of the Fiesta was born.
The first event was held in 1979, a small gathering to celebrate the first Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. It was organised by the Bristol Junior Chamber of Commerce and Shipping, the Fiesta was held at the popular ballooning location, Ashton Court.
The Fiesta has grown year after year and now this Fiesta attracts over 100 hot air balloons with near about 500,000 members of the public attending over the four days of the event.
