Evolution of Santa Claus

Wednesday, December 10th, 2014

A jolly man who wear a red dress, and carries a big bag with full of gifts and comes on Christmas Eve, we all knows it’s our Santa Claus. It’s also known as Father Christmas, Kris Kringle and simply “Santa”. Millions of children wait for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. But do you know the history of Santa Claus. His story stretches all the way back to the 3rd century.

History of Santa Claus

The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas. It’s believed that St. Nicholas was born around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey. He spent his whole life helping the poor & sick people and devoted his life entirely to Christianity. One of the best stories of the St. Nicholas kindness is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slavery or prostitution by their father by providing them with a dowry so that they could be married. St. Nicholas’s is known as the protector of children and sailors. He was the historical Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra.

During the middle ages, his feast day was celebrated on the anniversary of his death, December 6. Children were bestowed gifts in his honour. December 6 is the original day of gifts for the children, but in the course of the Reformation and its opposition to the veneration of saints in many countries the date was shifted to 24th and 25th December. So Saint Nicholas changed to Santa Claus. The custom of gifting to children on Christmas has been propagated by Martin Luther to focus the interest of the children to Christ instead of the veneration of saints. Martin Luther first suggested the Christ kind as the bringer of gifts. But Nicholas remained popular as gifts bearer for the people.

Every year on Christmas Eve, every child waits for Santa Claus. They wish Santa to visit their home and bestow them with lovely gifts. So, this Christmas decorate your house beautifully to welcome Santa Claus and wait for your cherished gifts.
