Labor Day is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes to pay tribute the contributions of workers have made the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since 1894.

History of Labor Day

More than hundred years after the first Labor Day observance, there are some disputes about who originally thought of the idea of an annual Labor Day observance. According to the Department of Labor, there is some controversy over whether Labor Day originated as the idea of Peter J. McGuire or Matthew Maguire.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”

But recent research support to the Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J. proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in New York City on 5th September 1882, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union and the second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. In 1884 the day was changed and the first Monday in September was selected for the Labor Day holiday and the similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date.

Victory Day in United States

Friday, August 8th, 2014

In Rhode Island, Victory Day is a state holiday celebrated on the second Monday of August to remember the sacrifices of veterans during World War II, including those taken as prisoners and tortured, injured or killed during the war. It is a mark of the anniversary of the Allies of victory over Japan during World War II. It was a federal holiday in the U.S. state of Rhode Island, a nationally recognized holiday from 1948 to 1975, but due to reference to good relationship with Japan it has been removed.

As proclaimed by then President Harry S. Truman, the official name of Victory Day was “Victory over Japan Day” and “V-J Day” observed on September 2, 1945 nationwide. For some reasons, the name was changed from “Victory over Japan Day” to “Victory Day” for the modern post-war Japan emerging in economic importance. Time to time few more name changes were attempted later, but all are unsuccessful, at last the name “Victory Day” remained the final official name.

On the occasion of Victory Day State, municipal offices, banks are closed, but federal offices, retail stores, liquor stores and supermarkets are open in Rhode Island. Thousands of people are come over the streets for watching the breathtaking military parade through their hometown, culminating in grandiose fireworks and many other special events are held to honor of Victory Day.

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta

Wednesday, August 6th, 2014

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is a four days fiesta, held on August every year in Bristol, England. It is Europe’s largest ballooning event and this year this fiesta complete its 36th years. It is a four days of fun for the whole family from 7th – 10th August 2014. The UK and other parts of the world bring their hot air balloons here for participating in mass ascents where as many as 100 balloons may launch at a time.

History of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta

In the early 1960’s, Don Cameron, newly qualified aeronautical engineer, came to join the Bristol Aeroplane Company based at Filton. Every weekend he would go to the Bristol Gliding Club at Nympsfield where many aeronautical exploits were planned. Giles Bulmer was also a member of this Club and he showed a National Geographic Magazine copy in front of all members, which was showing a new type of hot-air balloon that had just been invented in the USA.

Seven members of this Club took up the idea of a hot-air balloon and after a long struggle they produced the “Bristol Belle”, the first modern hot-air balloon in Western Europe. It was first flown on 9th July 1967 and all the seven members of this group learned to fly using this balloon.

After that Don Cameron discovered the way to make a hot air balloon and he built a few more balloons for a hobby basis with demand slowly expanding. In 1970, Don Cameron resigned from his job and founded Cameron Balloons Ltd Company.

In 1978, Don Cameron attempted his first balloon fly over the Atlantic and ended in the sea about 100 miles from France. After this adventure trip his fellow members of the Bristol Junior Chamber asked him about his journey and the idea of the Fiesta was born.

The first event was held in 1979, a small gathering to celebrate the first Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. It was organised by the Bristol Junior Chamber of Commerce and Shipping, the Fiesta was held at the popular ballooning location, Ashton Court.

The Fiesta has grown year after year and now this Fiesta attracts over 100 hot air balloons with near about 500,000 members of the public attending over the four days of the event.
